Rivalry Game Ends with Court Storming and Altercation

In a recent tense moment during a college basketball game, a Duke Blue Devils staff member was reportedly “punched in the face” as North Carolina Tar Heels fans flooded the court in celebration after their team’s victory. This incident was brought to light by head coach John Scheyer on Saturday.

The game, which saw a nail-biting finish, featured North Carolina’s Seth Trimble hitting a critical three-pointer with just 0.4 seconds remaining, leading to a 71-68 win over Duke, ranked No. 4 at the time. As fans surged onto the court, they were quickly ushered back by the referees, with less than a second left on the clock.

Scheyer shared that several team staff members were struck during the chaos. “It’s difficult for me to focus on the game right now because my main concern is the safety of the players,” he commented. “I want to acknowledge that Carolina played excellently, which makes this loss particularly hard for us.” He also noted that families were trying to fend off the crowd, emphasizing that such behavior is not in the spirit of the game.

Bubba Cunningham, athletic director for North Carolina State, expressed regret over the situation but did not elaborate on the injuries. “When the crowd rushed onto the court, there were some falls, but we needed to clear the area promptly. Normally, when we celebrate, we should make sure everyone exits safely,” Cunningham stated.

Concerns about player safety have been raised previously. Scheyer recalled a similar incident when Duke faced Wake Forest in 2022, where a player clashed with fans after a loss. He reflected on whether such post-game celebrations should be prohibited, stating, “It shouldn’t come to a point where players are at risk of being hit. A single impulsive reaction can lead to serious consequences, and today we had to push people back for our players’ safety.”

Despite the tumultuous ending, the victory improved North Carolina’s record to 19-4, while Duke fell to 21-2 for the season.
