Israeli President Visits Sydney Following Tragic Attack

On Monday, Israeli President Isaac Herzog honored the victims of an anti-Semitic attack in Sydney that claimed 15 lives, beginning a state visit focused on supporting Australia’s Jewish community and strengthening ties between the two nations.

During his visit on December 14, Herzog met with the families of those affected by the shooting incident at the Bondi Beach Jewish festival. In the aftermath of the violence, only one of the two suspects survived a confrontation with law enforcement.

Naveed Akram, the individual charged with the heinous act, is accused of carrying out Australia’s deadliest mass shooting in nearly three decades, which injured an additional 40 people.

Herzog placed a wreath and two stones from Jerusalem at Bondi Pavilion, which had become an unofficial memorial following the tragedy, adorned with numerous flowers and messages of condolence.

He emphasized that the stones would remain at the site as a tribute to the victims, stating that people of all faiths must “remain strong in the face of terrorism, violence, and hatred,” and that, collectively, they can defeat such evil.

“When we first learned about the Bondi Beach attack, it shook us deeply. Like all Israelis and Jews, we felt a profound sense of grief. I am here to show solidarity, friendship, and love,” Herzog told the media.

He also pointed out that this tragic event presented an opportunity to enhance relations between Israel and Australia, which, as democracies, share fundamental values and face global challenges together.

Herzog’s visit to Bondi occurred under tight security, with police snipers present as a precaution shortly after he and his wife Michal Herzog arrived in Sydney.

Before returning to Israel on Thursday, Herzog has plans to visit Melbourne and Canberra. These cities collectively house a significant portion—around 85%—of Australia’s Jewish population.

Protests are set to occur later in the day regarding Israel’s conduct in the ongoing Gaza conflict and its treatment of civilians there.

The visit has garnered a positive response from mainstream Jewish communities; an invitation was extended by Governor-General Sam Mostyn at Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s request.

There has been noticeable tension between Albanese and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu following Australia’s recent decision to recognize a Palestinian state.

On Monday, Herzog acknowledged the Australian government’s “positive steps” to combat anti-Semitism that emerged after the Bondi incident, which was reportedly motivated by Islamic State ideology.

In response to the attack, the Australian Parliament expedited legislation that lowered the threshold for banning groups accused of hate speech. Additionally, a Royal Commission has been established to look into the broader issues of anti-Semitism following the attack.

Herzog expressed his frustration alongside the victims’ families about the measures taken to avert such attacks in the future. “I share in these frustrations—I’ve seen this wave hit many countries, including the U.S., Canada, and the U.K.,” he noted.

In the wake of the Bondi shooting being classified as terrorism, New South Wales swiftly enacted laws granting police greater authority to manage protests. Authorities can now enforce protest limitations for up to 90 days following a terrorist incident, and measures were extended to maintain order during Herzog’s visit.

Those participating in organized protests face the risk of arrest, particularly with actions planned by the Palestinian Action Group from City Hall to the NSW Parliament later on Monday.

Herzog remarked on the protests targeted at him, characterizing them as efforts to “delegitimize” Israel’s right to exist.
