Murderer Caught Crying Over Video Game Release
A man convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend broke down in tears during his arrest, expressing regret over missing the launch of the video game Grand Theft Auto. Reports detail the unusual moment involving Robert Richens, 35, from Oxford.
On Friday, he was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 16 years and one month for the murder of Rachel Vaughan, 40, which occurred in May 2025. This information was provided by Thames Valley Police.
Body camera footage showed Richens, while handcuffed, lamenting his missed chance to play the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI, scheduled for release in November 2026. The footage was subsequently shared by media outlets, including The Independent.
In the video, he can be heard saying, “I miss the GTA,” to which the arresting officer responds, puzzled, asking, “Which GTA? Robert, what are you talking about?” The officer noted that Richens seemed too old to be worried about a video game release.
With tears, Richens remarked, “I’m going to get a life.” He also mentioned earlier during the interaction, “I accidentally killed her. At least I admitted it. I’m going to miss GTA, I’m going to get a life,” according to the officer’s recollection of the incident.
Later, he expressed his distress, saying, “I can’t get it out of my head…I could have run away.” His arrest took place early on May 30, after he reported the killing to authorities.
Prosecutors revealed that Richens had attacked Vaughan brutally at her home, inflicting 64 blunt force injuries before stabbing her. Despite efforts to save her, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Richens pleaded guilty to murder in a court hearing held in December 2025. Senior investigating officer Lt. Stuart May emphasized the tragic nature of the crime, stating that Vaughan should have been safe in her own home. He criticized Richens’ actions, noting the lack of any attempt to help Vaughan or to seek medical assistance before calling the police.
The sentence ensures that Richens will face the repercussions of his actions, which were described as callous and brutal.
