Controversy at the Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony in Italy
Recently, RaiSport, Italy’s broadcaster for the Winter Olympics, found itself in hot water after a series of blunders during the opening ceremony for the Milan-Cortina Games. The director, Paolo Petrecca, described the night as unforgettable, though perhaps not in the way one might hope. There were notable mistakes, including misidentifying Mariah Carey, confusing the president of the Olympic committee with the daughter of Italy’s president, and getting the ceremony’s location wrong. These gaffes didn’t just confuse viewers; they also caused frustration among the network’s own journalists.
On Monday, RaiSport’s reporters announced they were planning protests, including a walkout, immediately following the Olympics on February 22nd. A spokesperson for the state-run network confirmed that Petrecca would not commentate on the closing ceremony after discussions with CEO Giampaolo Rossi.
During the opening event, Petrecca mistakenly welcomed viewers to the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, while the actual ceremony took place at the famous San Siro soccer stadium.
While the broadcast rolled on, an amusing moment occurred when Petrecca introduced Carey, but the camera instead caught actress Matilda De Angelis. She humorously played along, posting “Please call me Mariah” later on Instagram.
Italian President Sergio Mattarella entered to applause, alongside International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry. There was a minor mix-up again when Mattarella accidentally referred to Coventry as his daughter, further compounding the errors of the night.
The Comitato di Redazione, a journalists’ union, expressed collective embarrassment, emphasizing that the situation left no one unscathed. They stated, “With one of the most anticipated events ever facing the worst result in RaiSport history, now is the time to make our voices heard.” As a result, they announced a three-day strike in protest.
In an ironic twist, Petrecca had recently stepped into the commenting role, taking over from Oro Brubarelli, who resigned after making a notable gaffe regarding Mattarella’s unexpected arrival by tram.
Currently, while tensions seem to be on simmer, there’s anticipation that dissatisfaction could rise further as the Olympics continue.
