Texas Man Not Charged After Shooting Daughter During Argument
A man from Texas will face no charges after he accidentally shot his daughter during an intense dispute regarding President Trump.
Lucy Harrison, visiting from England, was struck in the chest on January 10 at her father’s home in Prosper, roughly 55 miles north of Dallas, and later succumbed to her injuries.
Her father, Chris Harrison, who moved to the U.S. when Lucy was young, acknowledged during the inquest that he had relapsed into alcoholism and consumed three glasses of wine on the day of the incident.
Initially, authorities looked into the possibility of manslaughter, but a grand jury in Collin County ultimately decided against indicting him.
Lucy was in the U.S. with her boyfriend, Sam Littler, who revealed in court that tensions flared between father and daughter over Trump just days before the inauguration of his second term.
According to Littler, both Lucy and Chris had often pushed back against their father’s conservative views, particularly regarding his purchase of a Glock 9mm handgun years prior.
The confrontation started when Lucy challenged her father with a hypothetical question regarding a woman who had experienced sexual assault. She asked, “How would you feel if I were a girl in that situation?”
In response, Chris reportedly stated that he wasn’t too concerned since he had two other daughters at home.
It’s unclear what exactly President Trump may have thought about the dispute, but Lucy was noted to be quite upset by Trump’s dismissive remarks and ran upstairs just after their discussion.
Later that day, shortly before heading to the airport, Chris took Lucy by the hand to show her something in a bedroom on the first floor.
Just moments later, Littler recounted hearing a loud bang, followed by Chris yelling for his wife, Heather.
“I ran to the room, and Lucy was on the floor by the bathroom entrance. Chris was just screaming. It was complete chaos,” Littler said.
Chris informed police he had been watching news coverage about gun violence, which prompted him to offer to show Lucy his weapon.
“As I raised the gun, suddenly, there was that loud bang. I couldn’t comprehend what was going on. Lucy collapsed at once,” he recounted, admitting he wasn’t sure if his finger was on the trigger.
He has struggled with alcoholism in the past, including rehab, and acknowledged that he had been drinking that day. An officer on scene noted the smell of alcohol on his breath.
Chris, through his lawyer, expressed that he has “fully accepted” the repercussions of what happened, saying, “Not a day goes by without feeling the weight of that loss, and I will carry it for the rest of my life.”
Lucy’s mother, Jane Coates, remembered her daughter as a “true force of life.” She commented, “She cared deeply and was passionate about many things.”
“She loved engaging in discussions on what mattered to her,” she added.
