Teacher Fired and Arrested for Alleged Relationship with Student
A biology teacher from an all-girls Catholic school in New Orleans has been dismissed and taken into custody following allegations of engaging in a sexual relationship with a teenage student.
Teddy Page, 29, was arrested last week on charges of exchanging explicit messages and having an inappropriate relationship with a student. The New York Post reported this on Tuesday.
It is said that the relationship commenced in August after Page started teaching biology at Sacred Heart Academy, according to the Times Picayune.
As outlined in an affidavit from the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD), the situation escalated after a class introduction when the then 17-year-old student mentioned feeling a “spark” between them. This alleged connection led to two months of “personal and intimate” conversations. Reports indicate that in November, Page allegedly kissed the girl and had sexual relations with her at his apartment and in her car. At that time, she had turned 18.
The student’s mother became concerned about changes in her daughter’s behavior, including her irritability and frequent video calls with Page while they were on family vacations. Upon accessing her daughter’s social media accounts, she discovered explicit texts and images of the two.
After the mother presented this evidence to the principal at Sacred Heart, Page was fired and removed from the school premises.
Under Louisiana law, it’s illegal for educators to engage in sexual activities with students aged 17 to 21 if the educator is at least four years older and works at the same school.
During Page’s initial court hearing in Orleans Parish Criminal District Court, her bail was set at $15,000, according to court documents.
The principal of Sacred Heart Academy stated that a background check on Page during her hiring process did not uncover any issues.
A spokesperson for the school mentioned, “We are assisting the students and families who have come forward, offering resources and counseling to those affected by these incidents.”
