Trump signs order to support coal for national security and strengthen the energy grid

Trump Signs Executive Order on Coal Power

President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday, instructing the Department of the Army to collaborate directly with coal-fired power plants on long-term power purchase agreements. He asserted that this measure will yield “more reliable power and a stronger, more resilient grid.”

“I’m pleased to announce this directive,” Trump said, emphasizing the military’s forthcoming purchases of coal, which he claims will be both cheaper and more effective than previous sources.

The executive order, titled “Strengthening America’s National Defense with America’s Beautiful Clean Coal Power Fleet,” emphasizes the importance of a reliable power grid. It describes the grid as “a cornerstone of our nation’s national defense and economic stability,” urging that the U.S. must not depend on intermittent energy sources.

Trump pointed out, “It is the policy of the United States that coal is essential to our national and economic security.” The order mandates that the Secretary of the Army, in coordination with the Secretary of Energy, procure electricity from U.S. coal-generating facilities through long-term agreements.

Speaking at the White House, Trump was flanked by Cabinet members, coal workers, and Republican lawmakers. He argued that coal is vital for national defense and industries. He mentioned how winter storms recently disrupted power for millions, but many could still take hot showers due to coal power. “It’s clean, beautiful coal,” he stated.

He contrasted his administration’s approach with the previous one, claiming, “I ended the war on coal on my first day in office.” He criticized wind energy and labeled the Green New Deal a scam.

During his remarks, Trump mentioned initiatives to support coal-fired plants in Tennessee, which faced closures. “We’re going to keep them running strong, saving more than 450 jobs,” he said, adding that he has directed the Department of Energy to provide funding to similar plants in various states.

Furthermore, Trump highlighted the rapid permitting for large coal mines during his administration, stating that coal production and electricity generation increased significantly. “Since I took office, coal production has increased by nearly 4 million tonnes per month,” he noted.

In closing, he celebrated what he called American energy dominance, declaring, “America is now the world’s number one energy producer.” The Department of the Army has yet to respond to requests for comments on this order.
