Ilia Malinin faces a Winter Olympics setback that keeps him from the podium

Marin’s Figure Skating Gold Medal Aspirations Take a Shocking Turn

Ilia Marin clinched the gold medal in men’s figure skating, but it was far from a straightforward victory. As he prepared for his final routine during the men’s free skate, commentators Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir debated whether he would push himself or take the safer path to secure the win. Just moments later, Marin experienced a significant collapse, leaving spectators in disbelief.

At first, many thought Marin, dubbed the “quadruple god,” might execute up to seven quadruple jumps in his performance, a feat never before achieved. However, as things unfolded, the competition heated up, with Japan’s Yumi Kagiyama trailing closely behind him, albeit with three incomplete landings. This development meant Marin could potentially coast to victory.

When Marin took the ice, he appeared calm and collected, effortlessly landing his first quadruple toe. But then, everything fell apart. He attempted the challenging quad axel but ended up having to bail out, achieving only a single. Next was the quad salchow, where he again played it safe, landing a single jump instead. Points quickly dwindled. And just as he set up for a quad-triple combination, things went downhill further; he settled for a double and, shockingly, fell on landing.

To give you an idea of how chaotic this moment was, my immediate reaction in Slack was—well, let’s just say, it was intense.

Despite entering the free skate with a solid five-point lead, Marin ended the round in disappointing fashion, taking 15th place with a score of 156.33 and finishing 8th overall, well out of medal contention. In a stunning twist, Kazakhstan’s Mikhail Shaidlov, who had been fifth in the short program, surged ahead to seize the gold that many had expected to go to Marin.

The aspiring quad god left the ice clearly upset, realizing he had missed out on a medal in his first Olympic individual event. Stunned, he was overheard telling his father, “I don’t understand. I’ve never skated like that.”

This dramatic collapse goes down as one of the most memorable in Winter Olympic history. While Marin has won team gold, this disappointing result in the individual competition is likely to linger in his mind until the next opportunity.
