2028 Democratic Candidates Criticize Trump at Munich Security Conference

This week, candidates for the 2028 Democratic nomination took a moment to criticize President Donald Trump while attending the Munich Security Conference. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and California Governor Gavin Newsom were among those making headlines.

Former White House assistant general counsel, Hugh Hewitt, speculated that their presence at this notable event might serve as an early test for leading the Democratic Party’s presidential campaign in 2028. He even suggested that Ocasio-Cortez could emerge as the leading Democratic candidate, stating, “Everyone knows she’s going to be the nominee,” during a segment on “Fox & Friends Weekend.”

Ocasio-Cortez and Newsom’s Plans Raise Eyebrows

Hewitt took particular issue with the tax proposals put forth by Ocasio-Cortez and Newsom aimed at increasing taxes on the wealthy. When asked about her stance on potentially advocating for a wealth tax if she runs for president, Ocasio-Cortez expressed that it should be enacted “quickly.” In response, Hewitt labeled this approach as “terrible economics,” asserting that it could jeopardize national security. “They have this game in their head that’s like Candyland—a fantasy land with unicorns and floating bubbles—but it doesn’t work,” he commented.

Democratic Heavyweights Gather in Germany

Other notable Democrats at the conference included Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Arizona Senators Ruben Gallego and Mark Kelly. During her speech in Germany, Ocasio-Cortez addressed President Trump’s impact on America’s relationships with its allies, suggesting that he has contributed to a climate of authoritarianism: “I think many of us are here to say we are ready for the next chapter, not to lead the world into isolation, but to deepen our partnerships.”

Hewitt’s remarks came amid heightened tensions in the U.S. He noted that the criticism of Trump from Democrats during such a critical time raised eyebrows, especially considering the President’s discussions earlier about regime change in Iran while visiting troops at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

In light of all this, he said, “Hundreds of thousands of American men and women are at risk in the Navy and Army,” arguing that the actions and rhetoric of Ocasio-Cortez and her colleagues might be undermining America’s position and safety.

Efforts to reach Ocasio-Cortez for further comment did not yield a response immediately.
