Costco introduces mobile app ordering for personalized cakes and deli trays, addressing customer concerns

Costco Upgrades Cake Ordering System

Costco is set to retire an outdated system that has long frustrated its customers as part of a significant digital upgrade.

Shoppers will soon be able to order custom cakes and deli trays via the mobile app and website. Before this change, they had to visit a Costco location and fill out a paper form.

Company executives highlighted that these updates are aimed at simplifying the entire process from placing an order to pickup. They described the previous method as, well, “clunky.”

CEO Ron Vachris expressed enthusiasm about these changes, stating, “We’re excited to see what we can do with the app.” He mentioned that members had voiced concerns about the previous ordering procedures, which will now transition to a digital process, and the early adoption has been promising.

The revamped online ordering system will offer various options, including sheet cakes and customizable cakes. Customers will have the flexibility to choose size, shape, flavor, design, and text from a selection of available choices.

Although Costco hasn’t announced an exact implementation date for all stores, reports indicate that customers can anticipate the app’s “grocery store/bakery ordering” capabilities by the end of 2026.

If the new system operates similarly to the existing paper-based one, customers should expect their cake and deli tray orders to be ready in 24 to 48 hours.

This change will likely make Costco’s baked goods much more accessible, especially for those who live far from the store. In a Reddit post from 2023, one user pointed out how inconvenient the current process is, especially for people who have to drive long distances.

“I live about 40 minutes from my local Costco, so having an online ordering process would be very convenient,” they mentioned.

Another user echoed this sentiment, noting, “Same thing. It’s my birthday, and I don’t want to drive there two days in a row…”
