LeBron James faces backlash for remarks about Israel

LeBron James Faces Criticism Over Israel Comments

During a press conference leading up to his 22nd All-Star Game in Inglewood, California, LeBron James received some criticism from former MS NOW host Mehdi Hasan. The question posed was whether James had a message for his fans in Israel and his thoughts on Deni Avdija, an All-Star from the Portland Trail Blazers.

In his response, James acknowledged Avdija’s talent. “Deni is an All-Star; he’s been playing exceptional basketball,” he noted. Then, perhaps thinking deeply, he added, “If there are fans over there, I hope they follow my career. I want to inspire people not just to excel in sports, but also in life. I’ve never been to Israel, but I’ve heard wonderful stories. Maybe one day I’ll visit.”

Hasan, known for his provocative views on Israel, wasn’t shy in expressing his discontent. He took to social media, saying, “What a disgrace to LeBron.” This comes in light of his past comments following a major incident on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched a serious attack, leading to a significant Israeli response and eventual cease-fire.

As for Avdija, this season marked his first appearance as an All-Star, making him the only active NBA player from Israel. He joins the ranks of a few others, like Omri Casspi and TJ Leaf, who have played in the league previously.

In the newly formatted All-Star events, Avdija contributed about 15 minutes of playtime across two games, though the World All Stars unfortunately lost both matches.
