Trump’s Stance on Gateway Tunnel Funding

WASHINGTON – On Monday, President Trump declared his opposition to using federal funds to cover the cost overruns of the Gateway Tunnel project, which aims to expand and upgrade the Northeast Corridor Railroad connecting Newark and New York City.

He criticized the project, likening it to what he called Gavin Newsome’s “Railway to Nowhere,” warning that it would exceed budget projections by billions of dollars, potentially leading to significant financial issues down the line. “If we don’t invest the time and energy now to plan effectively, Gateway could face similar financial challenges,” he remarked. “The federal government will not be liable for any cost overruns. Not a single dollar!”

Earlier in the fall, during contentious negotiations around a government shutdown, Trump had ordered a freeze on federal funding for the Gateway project, seemingly in response to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who were advocating for the shutdown.

A loan facility that had been set to expire on February 6 allowed construction to continue, but on that same day, a federal judge in Manhattan mandated that $16 billion be reintegrated into the project.

Work on the Gateway initiative spans five locations across New York and New Jersey. The current tunnel is over a century old and suffered severe damage during Superstorm Sandy in 2012.

The rail route between New York City and New Jersey is the busiest corridor in the nation; in fact, the government previously regarded it as one of the most critical American infrastructure undertakings.

In private discussions not long ago, Trump and Schumer notably touched upon the possibility of renaming New York’s Penn Station and Washington’s Dulles International Airport after Trump in exchange for unlocking funding for the tunnel. Trump emphasized on Truth Social that the suggestion to rename Penn Station—described as “Trump Station”—had come from certain political figures and union leaders, and not from him directly.

Throughout his presidency, Trump has demonstrated a flair for renaming prominent federal buildings after himself, including the Kennedy Center and the Institute of Peace.

His influence has reached other significant infrastructure projects as well. For instance, he vetoed a bipartisan initiative last year aiming to provide clean drinking water to rural Colorado areas. Additionally, just last week, Trump threatened to impede the construction of the Gordie Howe International Bridge connecting Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, amid ongoing trade tensions with Canada.
