Lara Trump’s Reflections on the Departure from the White House
Lara Trump shared her unexpected feelings on the night her father-in-law, President Trump, departed the White House in 2021 during a recent episode of “Pod Force One.”
After Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election, the Trump family felt they were “on the brink of despair” upon arriving in Palm Beach, Florida, on the final Air Force One flight. She described that period as “very depressing” and a particularly challenging time for everyone involved, particularly for him.
“No one had much to say,” Lara added, reflecting the somber mood.
Before sitting down for dinner later that night, Trump looked around and remarked, “Well, kids, we’ve got to do it again,” emphasizing a sense of resilience right after leaving the presidency.
Lara noted this moment illustrated the importance of perseverance amidst adversity. She pointed out, “Any one thing that turned him off during his four years would have been enough for someone to say, ‘I’m done,’ but he never gave up.” She believed he understood the significance of what he was fighting for.
Fast forward nearly four years, Trump managed to defeat Vice President Kamala Harris in a tight election, winning all seven crucial swing states.
However, he faced significant challenges, including court battles where he faced criminal charges related to his attempts to challenge the 2020 election results, forcing his family to retreat to Mar-a-Lago.
The former president was indicted federally on one charge in Washington, D.C., as well as another in Fulton County, Georgia.
In addition, he faced allegations related to classified documents and payments made to adult film stars prior to his first presidential campaign. He has been embroiled in civil lawsuits in New York, including one that resulted in a substantial judgment for inflating his organization’s real estate values.
In 2024, there were also two assassination attempts against him. The first occurred in July during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania when he was shot in the ear. Then, two months later, another assailant attempted to take him out from a sniper’s nest near a golf course in Palm Beach.
Despite these legal and personal challenges, Trump regained the Republican presidential nomination with relatively few significant opponents in the 2024 race.
Lara noted that months before exiting the White House, he was defeated by Biden, who secured a significant electoral vote lead of 306 to 232, along with six of the seven battleground states.
On January 6, 2021, a mob inspired by Trump’s claims of a “rigged” election stormed the U.S. Capitol, interrupting the certification of the election results. Lara expressed that her father-in-law faced all these challenges knowing he would soon have to fight once more.
“If you’re willing to work harder and fight for something more than anyone else, you’ll always win,” she said, reiterating an important lesson about resilience.
When asked about his political future, Lara mentioned that he had turned down chances to run for the North Carolina Senate twice but hinted that he might consider it in the future.
Lara also recalled how Trump’s 2016 campaign began after a calm dinner with family in June 2015, emphasizing the collective impact of his ambitions. He had made it clear that it wasn’t just about him; it involved everyone connected to him.
Lara Trump remembered her father-in-law saying, “I want you to know that if we do the right thing, they’re going to come after us,” reflecting his awareness of the challenges ahead.
In a similar vein, before his victory over Hillary Clinton, Trump asserted, “If I’m going to do something, I want to do it right, even if it means I only serve one term.” He wanted to ensure he made the necessary changes for the country.
In closing, Lara reiterated that while Trump had passed on running for the Senate, he was open to future opportunities when the timing was appropriate.
