Shooting at Rhode Island Ice Hockey Rink

A tragic incident occurred at a Rhode Island ice hockey rink on Monday, where a man opened fire, resulting in the deaths of his ex-wife and adult son. Authorities identified the shooter as Robert Dorgan, 56, who later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

According to North Providence Mayor Charles Lombardi, the shooting took place at the Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket. Three additional individuals sustained injuries, including the shooter’s ex-wife’s parents, Linda and Gerald Dorgan, who are currently in critical condition in the hospital.

Robert Dorgan, who identified as transgender, apparently carried out the attack due to family tensions, particularly regarding his daughter, who spoke to media outlets stating that this was an act of “revenge” against his family. Amanda Wallace-Hubbard, Dorgan’s daughter from a different relationship, was present at the event with her young sons and described the chaos as particularly terrifying.

Wallace-Hubbard expressed gratitude towards an unidentified good Samaritan who intervened during the shooting, believing that this individual saved her and her children from harm.

In the midst of the chaos, video footage captured the panic of players and fans as they hurried for cover, with many people shouting and dodging bullets. At least a dozen shots can be heard ringing out during a high school game.

No specific motive has been publicly released by the authorities. Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Gonsalves suggested that the incident stemmed from a family dispute.

A representative for the Dorgan family shared that they are deeply affected by the tragedy and are working with authorities during the investigation. Meanwhile, investigators are analyzing surveillance footage and witness accounts to reconstruct the timeline of events.

Court records reveal that Robert Dorgan had experienced ongoing disputes with relatives, partly related to his gender identity. There were reports of confrontations, including threats and accusations of assault involving family members, stemming from his transition and subsequent family tensions.

Prior to the shooting, Robert Dorgan even expressed frustrations online regarding political figures, which might have contributed to the existing family rifts. The situation adds layers of complexity to an already painful and tragic event.
