Concerns Over Affordable Housing Project in Yountville
Thomas Keller, the acclaimed chef behind the prestigious French Laundry, is raising some questions regarding the planned affordable housing initiatives in Yountville, California.
The town aims to construct up to 150 multifamily housing units, along with retail and dining spaces, as outlined in a recent project decision letter.
Keller expressed his support for workforce housing but emphasized that it should genuinely benefit local residents. He stated, “Housing only works if it actually works for the people who live and work here.”
He added that it’s wise for Yountville to take a step back and ensure all foundational aspects are addressed before moving forward with such a large and costly project. “Pausing seems reasonable. It’s about responsible planning—addressing unanswered questions might just give this project a better shot at success,” he said.
Town Manager Brad Raulston shared with the Press Democrat that there’s a lack of desire to stall housing developments, particularly as many employees commute to wealthier areas. He highlighted the pressing reality: “If we don’t plan and we lose housing, we risk losing local jurisdiction—and we’re seeing this statewide.”
The development involves demolishing the former school administration building, which the town acquired for $11 million in 2024.
Funding for this acquisition came from a 2018 ballot initiative that increased the town’s hotel and lodging taxes by 1% to fund affordable and workforce housing efforts.
Colin Rankin, the California Republican Party Chairman, stated that California must prioritize small businesses and viable affordable housing methods. “When the French Laundry speaks, you know the politicians are out of touch,” he noted, referencing Keller’s concerns.
Meanwhile, the French Laundry is known for its luxurious nine-course tasting menu, costing around $424 per person, and the restaurant gained significant media attention in 2020 when Governor Newsom was caught violating his own COVID-19 restrictions there.
