President Trump’s Ash Wednesday Message

On February 18, 2026, President Donald Trump shared a message from the White House in recognition of Ash Wednesday, marking the start of Lent, a significant time for many Christians.

In his message, Trump noted that he and First Lady Melania Trump joined countless individuals across the globe in commemorating this day.

“Every Ash Wednesday, Christians receive ashes in the shape of a cross on their foreheads as a visible reminder of our belonging to Jesus Christ and our enduring need for penance,” he stated. He elaborated on the concept of acknowledging one’s sins during Lent, explaining that over the next 40 days, Christians will engage in prayer, fasting, and giving to deepen their faith and reflect on Jesus’ Passion and death, preparing for Easter.

Lent, as it unfolds, spans 40 days—excluding Sundays—leading up to Easter. This period echoes the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the wilderness.

Palm Sunday signifies the start of Holy Week, celebrating Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem before His crucifixion and resurrection. In many traditions, palm branches from the prior year’s celebration are burned to create the ashes used on Ash Wednesday.

Trump highlighted the importance of Lent, which calls for prayer, fasting, and charity—practices that echo throughout American history.

“From the Colonists who turned to prayer and fasting during the Revolutionary War to the compassion shown by America’s churches and charitable organizations, these acts of faith have always been central to our identity and way of life,” he remarked.

The president concluded his statement by referencing a biblical verse from Mark 1:15, emphasizing the call to repentance introduced by Jesus at the start of His ministry.

“This Ash Wednesday, as we remember the Passion and ultimate sacrifice of Christ on the cross, we send our best wishes for a meaningful Lenten season,” Trump expressed. “In preparing for the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter—the greatest miracle in history—we reflect on the sacred message: ‘This is the time of fulfillment. The Kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the Gospel.’”
