Geopolitical Changes on the Horizon?
In Washington, Texas Senator Ted Cruz mentioned that there’s a “totally” possible chance that the oppressive governments in Cuba, Iran, and Venezuela could fall within the next six months.
Speaking with Sean Hannity on Fox News, Cruz, who is part of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, remarked that the U.S. is currently in a unique time of geopolitical opportunity. However, he also cautioned that there’s no certainty these oppressive regimes will actually collapse.
“We’re at an extraordinary moment in history, Sean. There’s a good chance that in the next six months, we could witness regimes fall in Iran, Venezuela, and Cuba. Perhaps, we might even see them replaced by governments seeking better relations with the United States,” Cruz expressed on “Hannity.”
Recently, President Trump has ramped up pressure on these adversarial nations.
The U.S. has kept an oil quarantine on Venezuela since last year, and on January 3, Trump authorized Operation Absolute Solution to detain Nicolás Maduro, Venezuela’s leader.
These actions have allowed the U.S. to cut off one of Cuba’s main oil sources, putting additional pressure on the government in Havana.
Moreover, President Trump has deployed U.S. military assets, including two aircraft carriers, near Iran as a show of strength, while still engaging in diplomatic discussions.
This pressure follows reports of significant unrest in Iran, where thousands protested, marking one of the largest movements since the country’s 1979 revolution.
“To be clear, I’m not being naive about this. There are numerous things that could go awry,” Cruz pointed out.
“However, if these changes occur, it would be the most substantial geopolitical shift since the Berlin Wall came down, as America won the Cold War without firing a shot,” he added.
On Thursday, President Trump noted that a decision regarding a potential strike on Iran would likely occur “in the next 10 days.”
He mentioned, “We may or may not need to escalate further. We’re probably going to reach a deal,” during a peace committee summit focused on Gaza in Washington, D.C.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has made provocative remarks towards Trump, threatening to target U.S. warships in the region.
“The Americans persistently claim they have sent warships to Iran,” Khamenei’s team wrote on an English-language account. “Indeed, warships are dangerous military equipment.”
However, they added, “What’s more dangerous than the warship is the weapon that can send it to the bottom of the ocean.”
Additionally, Iran has been conducting naval exercises in the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz, a crucial passageway through which about 20% of the world’s oil is transported annually.
