Trump Sets Deadline for Iran Nuclear Deal Negotiations

On Thursday, President Donald Trump indicated that Iran has a limited timeframe to finalize a deal with the United States, cautioning that circumstances could shift rapidly if discussions do not progress as hoped.

The main focus of the negotiations is on curbing Iran’s nuclear activities, which U.S. officials express concern are advancing toward weapons-grade levels. There are also calls from the U.S. and Israel for Iran to dismantle its long-range ballistic missile program, end its support for regional militant organizations, and cease violent actions against domestic protesters.

Speaking to reporters on Air Force One, Trump asserted his commitment to striking a deal, declaring, “We’re going to get a deal, or we’re going to get a deal one way or the other.”

While Trump did not specify whether the complete dismantling of Iran’s nuclear capabilities is his end goal, he did mention that failing diplomacy would lead to negative consequences for Iran. “Either we reach a deal or it’s going to be bad for them,” he warned.

He ominously noted that Iran might have “10 or 15 days, almost 10 days at the most” to secure an agreement, suggesting the window for a breakthrough is closing.

These statements came amid ongoing efforts to negotiate with the Iranian government.

There has been some hope from Trump regarding the talks, which have seen mixed responses thus far. He stated that there have been “good talks,” and a senior U.S. official is expected to deliver a written proposal addressing American concerns. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi mentioned, “We believe we have made good progress,” but acknowledged that achieving an agreement is not imminent.

Vice President J.D. Vance discussed critical boundaries in an interview, saying there are “red lines that should not be crossed.” He remarked on the positive aspects of recent discussions but also highlighted certain expectations that the Iranian leadership may not be ready to accept.

Despite ongoing negotiations, Iran has resisted pressures from the U.S. and Israel to limit its missile activities and sever ties with militant groups in the region.

Coinciding with Trump’s comments, Iran conducted annual military exercises alongside Russia, as a second U.S. aircraft carrier nears the Middle East. Moreover, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei has issued threats of military action, underscoring the tensions existing alongside these diplomatic efforts.
