This morning marks the start of the semifinals in the Olympic men’s ice hockey tournament, featuring Canada, the top seed, taking on the defending gold medalists, Finland.
Both teams made it through their quarterfinal matches with narrow overtime victories. Finland edged out Switzerland 3-2, while Canada secured a 4-3 win against the Czech Republic. Notably, none of the overtime stretches reached three minutes.
As we look forward to the game, there’s lingering uncertainty around Canada’s captain, Sidney Crosby. He sustained a lower body injury during the quarterfinals held on Wednesday.
Coach John Cooper expressed confidence, saying, “Sid will never be taken out of the tournament. We’ve got the best players together to watch him. We’re taking it one day at a time and won’t risk anyone’s health. But if he’s good to go, he’ll play.” Further updates are expected within the next day.
The semifinal matchup will determine who moves on to the gold medal game on Sunday against either the United States or Slovakia, while the losing team will face off for bronze against the other semifinal loser.

The Canada vs. Finland semifinal is set to kick off today at 10:40 a.m. ET.
