Bill Maher Suggests Canceling State of the Union Address
On Friday’s episode of “Real Time,” comedian Bill Maher proposed canceling the upcoming State of the Union address scheduled for this week, indicating that it reinforces an unrealistic perception of presidential power. He expressed that the event has misled the American public into believing that a president operates like a king.
Maher criticized the ceremony’s theatricality, remarking, “The State of the Union is next Tuesday, so let’s just do away with it. It’s a boring, histrionic after-dinner speech in which the president is introduced like royalty.” He likened the entrance of the president, particularly Trump’s, to a mixed martial artist entering a ring, suggesting a spectacle that diminishes the importance of Congress. “You have MPs lining the aisle like medieval peasants, and then the president steps up to dictate the agenda, creating this illusion of control,” he noted.
As Trump prepares to address Congress later this week, Maher emphasized that this practice isn’t part of the Constitution’s framework. He even recited Article 1, Section 1, highlighting Congress’s central role in law-making and governance. “The Constitution dedicates a significant portion to Congress’s powers—taxation, declaring war. The president’s role is to execute those laws, not define them,” he explained.
Maher further asserted that the essence of American democracy lies with Congress, suggesting that “the president deserves a supporting actor award at best.” He stated that the tradition of the State of the Union is contrary to the intentions of the Founding Fathers like George Washington, who didn’t envision the president behaving in such a grandiose manner.
He concluded by sharing his own reflection on Trump’s reactions to his critiques, pointing out the tension that has developed. Maher quipped about the awkwardness of feeling obligated to accommodate the expectations of others, especially when it comes to social interactions, humorously comparing it to traditional gender dynamics.
