Emotional Ceremony at the White House for Angel Families Day

On Monday, a poignant ceremony took place at the White House, where hearts were heavy as names of crime victims, impacted by illegal immigrants, were read aloud. An emotional chorus sang “Amazing Grace,” amplifying the solemnity of the event.

President Trump organized this gathering to honor families like Laken Riley’s, declaring February 22nd as Angel Families Day. In a strong gesture of remembrance, he signed a proclamation recognizing this day in memory of Laken and others—62 individuals killed by illegal immigrants. Laken Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student, was tragically murdered on this date in 2024.

Trump expressed that “we will never forget them,” vowing to stand by the Angel families and assist them in their quest for justice. After signing the proclamation, he sat among the families as their loved ones’ names were read out loud.

During the moving ceremony, Alison Phillips, Laken’s mother, alongside Marie Vega, who lost her son to an illegal immigrant, shared powerful stories of their grief and thanked the president for his unwavering support. As tears flowed, Trump offered hugs of condolence, inviting them to share their painful stories on stage.

Phillips issued a strong warning, stating that what happened to her family could strike any household. Laken, who was jogging when she was killed by a Venezuelan man living unlawfully in the U.S., led to the creation of the Laken Riley Act, which calls for the federal detention of illegal immigrants arrested for crimes. President Trump plans to sign the bill in January 2025, marking the first legislation of his second term.

“This can happen to any family,” Phillips cautioned. “It happened to mine, and it could happen to yours.”

She also praised Trump, noting that he had promised to remember Laken from the very beginning, even before he was president. “You’re engaging in a tough battle that many wouldn’t,” she said, expressing her deep gratitude.

Laken’s story stirred Republicans to criticize then-President Biden for his handling of illegal immigration. Vega recounted her harrowing experience when her family was ambushed in their Texas home, where she witnessed her son being killed while defending him. Her emotional words emphasized that without Trump, the consequences of open borders would have remained hidden.

Former NYPD officer Ethan Carelli shared his frustrations about New York City’s immigration policies, highlighting how Laken’s murderer should have been deported instead of being released. He lamented the failure of the system to protect innocent lives.

Throughout the event, there were lighter moments as well. Trump engaged with attendees, like Patty Morin, asking her about her upcoming eye surgery and sharing that he financially supported it. Morin’s daughter was killed by an illegal Salvadoran while hiking in 2023, and she has often visited the White House to advocate for Angel families.

As she expressed her gratitude, she mentioned her intention to hug Trump after the ceremony, reflecting the mix of humor and warmth that permeated the event.
