Democratic lawmakers are gearing up to express their objections during President Trump’s State of the Union address on Tuesday, but they’re aiming to sidestep a repeat of the chaos seen in 2025.
During Hill’s 2025 address, Democrats faced backlash for their disruptive actions—many members displayed signs accusing the president of dishonesty, with some walking out mid-speech. Al Green (D-TX) notably created a scene by interrupting with his cane, which led to his removal from the event.
Breitbart News reported that Trump criticized the Democrats’ behavior, describing it as “very embarrassing for the Democratic Party.”
Now, Democratic leaders seek to prevent such negative attention during this year’s SOTU.
Hakeem Jeffries, as House Minority Leader, is encouraging his fellow Democrats to challenge the president’s claims while advising them to proceed carefully. Some members have opted to attend alternative events instead, like a gathering on the National Mall or a “Swamp States” event at the National Press Club, according to the Hill.
Senator Adam Schiff (D-CA) stated he won’t be attending Trump’s speech, marking the first time he’s skipped such events. “I’ve never missed one. I’ve always attended the inauguration and the State of the Union. But this isn’t normal. I won’t give him the audience he wants to spread falsehoods,” he remarked.
On the Republican side, strategist Mark Bednar noted that Trump’s speech will be a chance for Americans to “celebrate” the positives in the nation, according to Breitbart News.
“The energy in the room is amazing. With the president, the Cabinet, Congress members, and special guests all present, it creates a sense of unity. It’s a chance to celebrate not just policies but the good things about America—this night is something special,” he expressed.
Breitbart News mentioned that Insider Advantage, known for its accuracy in 2024 polling, currently places Trump’s approval rating at 50 percent.
