Lakers’ Struggles Resurface in Loss to Celtics

The Los Angeles Lakers have faced their share of challenges recently, but their recent defeat against the Boston Celtics has ignited discussions about their repeated issues with physically demanding opponents.

During Sunday’s game, the Lakers’ offense was particularly lackluster, especially in the first half. They ended up scoring only 89 points, marking one of their lowest tally of the season against a familiar rival.

Part of the problem stemmed from the Lakers’ tendency to play into the Celtics’ hands, settling for mid-range shots rather than attacking the basket. Over 40 percent of their attempts came from mid-range, which was one of the highest percentages this season. Coach JJ Redick pointed out that Boston’s defensive strategy forced the Lakers into uncomfortable positions.

“We should’ve put more pressure on the rim,” Redick explained. “Especially early on, when facing a team that struggles against the pick-and-roll, it can complicate your options.” He added that they needed to focus on finding teammates and improving ball movement.

However, the Celtics also showcased a physical playing style that often left the Lakers scrambling for answers. As the game progressed, frustration mounted, and the Lakers seemed to lose that physicality.

Much of their frustration was directed at the referees, particularly with some controversial no-calls that seemed to favor the Celtics. For instance, Marcus Smart was given a technical for arguing, while Austin Reeves faced scrutiny for his comments regarding a play involving Smart.

Redick received a technical foul for disputing a potential goaltending call on LeBron James’ shot. The technicals added to the growing tension on the court.

The Lakers’ inability to adapt as the Celtics gained control only led to further issues. “It can be tough to keep your composure in these situations,” Reeves acknowledged. “We all need to learn to move past the frustrations and focus on the next play.”

This emotional impact affected their offensive strategies too. Once the Celtics seized the momentum, the Lakers often resorted to isolation plays and high pick-and-rolls, neglecting necessary off-ball movement.

“It’s vital to adjust and play to various styles,” Reeves noted. “On nights when you have players like Luka Doncic and LeBron, some games will be easier, but others will test you. We all need to improve our passing to create better opportunities.”

Ultimately, this matchup with the Celtics revealed that the Lakers still have work to do if they hope to succeed in the postseason.
