Gutfeld Critiques Progressive Critics’ Understanding of American Life
On Monday, Fox News host Greg Gutfeld criticized his progressive opponents, asserting that many on the left lack an understanding of how people live around the world.
Discussing the 2026 Winter Olympics, Gutfeld noted that expressions of American pride were important, suggesting that if former Vice President Kamala Harris had been in charge, media focus would have shifted more toward identity politics rather than celebrating the athletes. He made these remarks on “The Five.”
“Just think about how political it would have become if Kamala Harris had been president. She’d probably send Rachel Levine into the locker room to celebrate both a gold medal and a transgender athlete at the same time,” Gutfeld stated. He also reflected on the perception of hockey, questioning why a chipped tooth is seen as attractive in the sport, whereas an injury isn’t. “We loved Alyssa Liu, right? She won gold, yet there were murmurs about how the right could celebrate her success.” He suggested that critics often make it more about their biases than the achievements themselves.
According to Gutfeld, the criticism indicates a fundamental issue where some voices on the left won’t celebrate American athletes unless there is a political alignment. “If you look at their reactions, they can’t celebrate someone unless they’re in line with their political beliefs. We, on the other hand, can appreciate talent regardless,” he explained. “If that can’t happen, then something has gone amiss. Some may even go so far as to criticize America without realizing that many around the world aspire to come here.”
Gutfeld pointed out that progressive critics seem detached from reality. “They lack context, right? They view America as the worst country ever, but forget what other countries are really like. It’s a myth that leftists are somehow more cultured than the rest of us. They underestimate the world beyond their neighborhoods, believing that dining at an ethnic restaurant makes them worldly,” he added. According to him, many athletes who travel get to appreciate life in the U.S. even more after experiencing limitations elsewhere.
Alysa Liu achieved a remarkable comeback at the 2026 Winter Olympics, winning gold after a two-year hiatus from figure skating since the 2022 Beijing Games. She scored a personal best of 147.52 points in the free skate, totaling 214.91 points, and became the first American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in figure skating since Sarah Hughes in 2002.
