Jim Breuer Criticizes American Airlines for Downgrade Incident
Jim Breuer, former “Saturday Night Live” cast member, has voiced his frustration with American Airlines after he and his wife were unexpectedly moved from first class to economy class just prior to boarding.
The 58-year-old comedian recounted the experience during one of his performances, explaining that they had “splurged” on first-class tickets for a trip to see their daughter, who was interning in Honolulu, Hawaii. They also had round-trip tickets from Florida.
While the journey to Hawaii went smoothly, things took a turn on their return flight.
The couple was set to fly back to Florida in first class after a brief layover in Arizona and had even pre-ordered their meals for the flight.
Breuer mentioned that, at the gate, an airline pilot—who wasn’t actually scheduled for that flight—recognized him.
A few minutes later, as they prepared to board, the couple was abruptly downgraded to economy.
As compensation, the airline offered a $500 voucher alongside a $400 refund, which Breuer felt was inadequate. He expressed that he felt they had “stolen” from him.
“This is awful because, to me, you took my ticket, you took my money,” he stated. “An American Airlines employee took it from me.”
He further criticized the airline, noting that while they allowed employees to take priority, they misled him about overbooking, offering nothing substantial in return.
Breuer equated his experience to having his wallet stolen, asserting that the pilot had essentially taken his seat.
The stand-up comic also expressed his disappointment with the airline’s lack of follow-up after he tried to contact them multiple times. He emphasized that he was not seeking an automated response.
“I just want someone to call and say, ‘How can I make this right for you?'” Breuer added.
In a light-hearted tone, he mentioned that he’d be satisfied with two one-way first-class tickets anywhere in the U.S.
This incident resonated with many of his fans, who quickly rallied in support of Breuer.
“I’ve traveled 1.5 million miles with American Airlines, and they treated me poorly. Loyalty seems to be one-sided,” one commenter shared.
Another chimed in, “It’s good you have a way to express this. The rest of us have to just accept it.”
One user pointed out that a lawsuit regarding unfair refunds and involuntary downgrades against American Airlines is slated for 2024.
According to policies, American Airlines grants outbound pilots, who are traveling as passengers, priority upgrades to first class, often putting them ahead of frequent flyers.
Deadheading pilots are prioritized for upgrades within 24 hours of departure to ensure they’re well-rested for subsequent flights.
