Apple Shifts Mac Mini Production to the U.S.

Apple has revealed plans to transfer a portion of its Mac Mini desktop manufacturing from Asia to the United States. This move aligns with efforts by President Trump aimed at boosting high-tech manufacturing domestically.

According to a report, Apple will start some production of its Mac Mini machines at Foxconn’s site in Houston, Texas. This initiative is slated to kick off later this year as part of Apple’s broader strategy to invest domestically.

During a recent public tour of the Houston facility, Apple COO Sabi Khan shared insights about the production plans. The tour covered the two main buildings at the site; one is focused on assembling Apple’s AI servers, while the other will be transformed into a 220,000-square-foot area dedicated to Mac Mini manufacturing.

This decision is part of a larger strategy for significant domestic investment by Apple. Last August, they announced a commitment to invest $600 billion in the U.S. over four years, following encouragement from the Trump administration for companies to increase their domestic investment. In return for their spending pledges, companies get certain tariff exemptions. Apple is now among several companies that have made similar commitments.

Khan clarified that Mac Mini production won’t be entirely relocated to the U.S. Operations will remain active at current Asian facilities, with the new Houston line primarily catering to local demand as it grows. This choice allows Apple to keep its established supply chain intact while increasing its manufacturing presence at home.

Addressing concerns around the viability of the new Houston operation in light of the Austin facility’s performance, Khan expressed greater confidence in the Mac Mini’s long-term appeal. He mentioned that the Mac Mini enjoys broader popularity compared to Apple’s pricier product, the Mac Pro, suggesting a more stable foundation for its domestic production.

In addition to expanding manufacturing, Apple has plans to enhance the Houston facility’s role in education and workforce development. A new training center will be established, focusing on advanced manufacturing technologies. This educational initiative aims to offer training on Apple’s proprietary methods to various groups, such as students and supplier employees. The training center is expected to open around the same time as the Mac Mini production line, both projected to launch later this year.
