Trump Honors National Guardsmen During State of the Union

In his State of the Union address on Tuesday, President Donald Trump awarded the Purple Heart to Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolf and posthumously to Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom. Both were injured in an ambush while serving in Washington, D.C., last year.

During his speech, President Trump took a moment to acknowledge Wolf and Beckstrom’s parents, expressing deep appreciation. “I will ask the esteemed General James Seward to present an award originally established by the great President George Washington,” he said, referring to the distinguished Purple Heart. “We love you all.”

While Trump spoke, Major General James “Jim” D. Seward of the West Virginia National Guard presented Beckstrom’s parents with a special medal and pinned the Purple Heart to Staff Sergeant Wolf, who was shown in the viewing gallery.

President Trump emphasized Beckstrom’s patriotism, telling her parents, “Your daughter was a true American hero. She will be deeply missed.” He added, “She was a wonderful person; the media covered her story extensively. It’s quite tragic.”

Speaking directly to Wolf, Trump recalled a moment during his hospital visit: “The doctors thought Andrew was gone, but his mother insisted, ‘No, he’s going to make it.’ I haven’t encountered anything like that.”

West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey highlighted the significance of the event, calling it “a solemn and unforgettable moment” that ensures the courage of these individuals won’t be forgotten, not just in West Virginia, but nationally.

Beckstrom and Wolf were shot last November, just a short distance from the White House, in an incident that authorities are investigating as a terrorist attack. The alleged gunman is reportedly an Afghan refugee who was resettled in the U.S. following troop withdrawals in 2021.

The House later unanimously passed a resolution to honor both Guardsmen. Representative Jill Tokuda, D-Hawaii, praised them as exemplary representatives of the country, highlighting the values of service and compassion that resonate with America’s youth.
