Democratic Pushback Against Trump’s Address

In an effort to counter President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address, Democrats are resorting to heckles and boycotts. This might be disheartening because, contrary to their attempts, a significant number of viewers found the speech acceptable and its message resonated with them.

A CNN poll revealed that close to half of the audience believes that Trump’s policies will steer the country in a positive direction. David Charian, CNN’s political director, noted that a substantial 64% said Trump’s policies are beneficial, while only 36% thought otherwise. It’s somewhat surprising, maybe, but shows a shift in perception.

“Look at how much President Trump has grown in this speech,” Charian remarked. Initially, 54% of viewers felt his policies would benefit the country, but that jumped up by 10 points after the speech. So, in a way, Trump did manage to sway some opinions.

On the policy front, a few things caught attention:

  • His tariffs might “effectively replace the modern income tax system.”
  • A proposed bill aims to ban any state from providing commercial driver’s licenses to undocumented individuals.
  • He intends to bolster America’s security and dominance in the Western Hemisphere while protecting national interests.
  • A preference for diplomatic solutions with Iran was expressed.
  • Plans to curb the rising costs of prescription drugs were highlighted.
  • His administration collaborates with major tech companies to satisfy electricity needs.
  • He aims to make it easier for Americans to save for retirement.
  • Finally, he vowed to stop large Wall Street firms from acquiring numerous single-family homes.

Through this, Charian seemed to be targeting the liberal audience, suggesting that the polling skews Republican due to the nature of the viewers tuning into a Republican president’s address. Meanwhile, he also emphasized that CNN’s broader polling painted a different picture.

In a separate recent survey, just 38% of respondents felt that Trump’s policy suggestions would benefit the country, while a notable 61% disagreed.
