Controversy During Trump’s State of the Union Address
During President Trump’s State of the Union address, Rep. Rashida Tlaib, known for her progressive stance, ignited backlash when she chanted “KKK” repeatedly as Republicans enthusiastically cheered “USA.”
A video surfaced showing the Michigan Democrat mocking fellow Rep. Ilhan Omar, who has been controversially labeled by a far-right hate group, as her Republican colleagues erupted with applause for Trump.
The National Republican Congressional Committee expressed their outrage on social media, suggesting it encapsulated the current state of the Democratic Party.
Statements from critics were harsh, with many calling Tlaib and Omar’s actions “offensive” and “treasonous,” asserting that they should be removed from Congress for their behavior, which they argued showed disdain for the country.
One user on social media noted the inappropriateness of a non-black person using the term “KKK,” highlighting the historical pain associated with it. Another added that the incident was simply embarrassing.
Calls for Tlaib and Omar’s expulsion from Congress surfaced, with some expressing disbelief over what they perceived as blatant anti-American sentiment.
A representative for Tlaib did not provide an immediate comment regarding the incident.
Trump, in his response on social media, labeled Tlaib and Omar as “mentally deranged,” suggesting their behavior warranted institutionalization. He described their reactions during the State of the Union as wildly erratic.
Tlaib and Omar, both the first Muslim women elected to Congress, appeared disengaged during Trump’s address, often looking at their phones and leaving the event early, despite their colleagues who had decided to boycott the speech altogether.
