Newark, New Jersey – It’s been quite the journey for Buffalo Sabers’ Tage Thompson. After scoring an important goal for Team USA against Slovakia in the semifinals, he played a crucial role in leading the U.S. to a victory over Canada, clinching the gold medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Thompson mentioned feeling worn out and a bit off his game following Wednesday’s matchup with the New Jersey Devils, which was the Sabers’ first NHL game since the Olympic break. But most fans probably didn’t sense that fatigue. He not only scored the first goal of the night, but also assisted in another, helping the Sabers to a 2-1 win over the Devils.
Jack Hughes, a standout for the Devils and one of Team USA’s stars with a game-winning overtime goal against Canada, received recognition from his team before the game. In a classy gesture, he invited Thompson to join him at center ice, giving the crowd a chance to cheer for them both.
Despite Thompson’s impressive return, much of the post-Olympic media chatter has focused on Team USA’s upcoming visit to the White House. They are set to appear at President Trump’s State of the Union address on Tuesday.
White House visit, MAGA hat uproar
Thompson faced sharp criticism from some media outlets after he was spotted wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat, alongside press secretary Caroline Leavitt and several teammates.
In the photograph shared on social media, while many in the group wore traditional USA hats, Thompson’s choice sparked significant backlash online.
After the game, I asked him about the criticism regarding the hat. Sitting quietly at his locker, he said, “I’m proud to be an American. I have my beliefs, and everyone is entitled to their own opinions.” He added, “I think we should be able to live in peace knowing not everyone will agree.”
I also inquired about his Christian faith, which he says informs much of his life. He reflected, “Jesus is everything to me. We’re all imperfect and need Him. I fall short every day; it’s His guidance that I rely on.”
“Having that hope gives me peace and joy, no matter what I’m doing. I’m grateful to play the game I love at a high level and to have a supportive family and friends around me,” he continued.
American hockey fans are likely feeling a deep sense of gratitude toward Tage Thompson and his teammates for bringing home one of the most significant gold medals in U.S. Winter Olympic history.
