F-22 Raptor fighters arrive in Israel for the first time due to rising tensions with Iran

US Deploys F-22 Raptors Near Tehran Amid Rising Tensions

In response to escalating tensions, eleven F-22 Raptor stealth fighter jets from the US Air Force have been stationed at Ovda Air Base in southern Israel. This marks a historic operational deployment of US military aircraft in Israel, amidst a significant military buildup in the region—something not witnessed on this scale for many years. Concerns are mounting regarding Iran’s nuclear ambitions and missile capabilities.

The strategic significance of the F-22 is clear to US officials. As retired Lt. Gen. Joseph Guastella noted, it’s basically the top air-to-air fighter out there. He described the jets’ presence as a “very clear signal of deterrence,” allowing the US to negotiate with strength.

The F-22 is designed to establish air superiority, meaning it can effectively operate in heavily defended airspace. This capability could be crucial if military action against Iran were to unfold. Essentially, it serves as a precursor to ensure the skies are safe for more vulnerable aircraft targeting Iran’s nuclear and missile sites.

Guastella pointed out that having a substantial military presence means the US can threaten almost any target in Iran, should that be the president’s decision. Meanwhile, retired Lt. Gen. Charles Moore clarified that this deployment doesn’t necessarily indicate an impending strike; rather, it broadens the options available to the president.

Trump has communicated that while diplomacy remains key, he’s open to military options. Just recently, he expressed dissatisfaction with Iran and insisted on a deal, yet emphasized that at times, military force is necessary, especially given Iran’s reluctance to comply with US demands regarding its nuclear program.

The choice to position these jets in Israel is also noteworthy. Unlike Gulf bases, which may have political restrictions, Israel offers fewer limitations for operational freedom, allowing more nimbleness in crisis situations.

Jonathan Ruhe from the Jewish Institute for National Security Studies underscored that having a forward base in Israel would increase US flexibility in the region. Former Israeli Air Force commander Maj. Gen. Amikam Norkin reiterated that US deployment of advanced aircraft demonstrates unwavering US commitment to Israeli security, stressing that the Iranian threat isn’t solely an Israeli concern; it’s a regional issue.

In terms of military strategies, Adm. Brad Cooper, head of US Central Command, recently briefed Trump on various military contingencies aimed at Iran. Although officials maintain that the deployment is more about preparation than immediate conflict, the arrival of these advanced jets signifies enhanced US-Israeli military cooperation and sends a clear message to Tehran regarding US military readiness.
