Backlash Against NYC Mayor Over Iran Post
New York City’s mayor, Zoran Mamdani, is under fire from conservatives on social media following his condemnation of a U.S.-led attack on Iran that resulted in the death of Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Khamenei.
In a Saturday post, Mamdani criticized the Trump administration’s actions as the joint operation by the U.S. and Israel unfolded. This post has garnered around 20 million views.
“Today’s military attack on Iran by the United States and Israel marks a devastating escalation of their illegal war of aggression,” he stated.
Mamdani expressed that Americans do not want another conflict, saying, “Bombing cities. Killing civilians. Starting a new war. We don’t want another war for regime change.”
He emphasized that Americans are seeking “relief from the affordability crisis” and addressed Iranians in New York directly. “You are part of the fabric of this city. You are our neighbors, our small business owners, our community leaders. You’re safe here.”
Conservative figures quickly condemned his remarks, arguing that they seemed to show sympathy for Iran’s regime while also noting Mamdani’s silence on the deaths of Iranian protesters in recent years.
Republican Senator Ted Cruz remarked, “My fellow mayor is rooting for the Ayatollah,” suggesting a shared understanding between them.
FOX News host Brian Kilmeade challenged Mamdani with, “Will you say anything pro-American? Do you know Iranians? They hate Khamenei. He’s responsible for thousands of deaths.” He urged the mayor to reconsider his stance and suggested he resign.
Iranian-American journalist Masih Alinejad shared her discomfort, stating, “I don’t feel safe in New York when I hear about people like Mamdani who sympathize with a regime that has killed more than 30,000 unarmed Iranians.” She criticized Mamdani for not speaking out against the regime’s violence.
Others like billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman questioned Mamdani’s judgment, stating, “Why can’t you tell the difference between right and wrong?”
Republican representatives added their voices too, with Rep. Nancy Mace criticizing Mamdani for positioning himself as a moral authority on U.S. foreign policy while neglecting local issues. “History will not remember him at all,” she said.
Meanwhile, it was reported that shortly after Mamdani’s post, Trump and Israeli officials confirmed Khamenei’s death due to a military operation, with Israeli leaders stating that Khamenei’s residence had been targeted successfully.
“Khamenei was the longest-serving dictator in the modern Middle East,” remarked Behnam Ben Taleburu from the FDD Iran program, highlighting his ruthless approach in maintaining power.
