Susan Lucci Shares Insights on Health and Life After Loss

After the birth of her second child, Susan Lucci returned to the set of “All My Children” a week early, clad in a form-fitting nightgown. Known for her iconic role as Erica Kane, Lucci’s memoir, “La Lucci,” reflects on rebuilding her life following the death of her husband, Helmut Huber. In her late 70s, she also shares her life’s highlights and the humor she found in it.

“You know, I actually ate asparagus for ten days straight before returning to work,” Lucci told an interviewer. It’s amusing how these things work out—she felt a mix of excitement and anxiety, especially wearing something so revealing. “I was really eager to take on the role of Erica Kane but couldn’t shake the worry of needing to lose a few pounds,” she recalled with a laugh. “However, it never bothered me too much; I just did what needed to be done.”

Lucci has adopted healthier habits as she prepares for her on-screen appearances. In her memoir, she admits that until she discovered Pilates in 1995, her eating habits were less than ideal. After she began this exercise routine, her cravings changed dramatically—she claims she doesn’t even want cheeseburgers or tacos anymore.

Filming took place mostly in New York, where the endless dining options posed a challenge. “Anyone who knows New York knows there’s no shortage of food,” Lucci explained. “I’d often look at menus early in the morning, encouraging folks that it was perfectly fine to plan their meals ahead of time.”

“I would sometimes order wild things like meatball heroes or enchiladas. But you know what? After starting Pilates, my appetite changed. I wasn’t even that interested in fries anymore,” she shared. “It wasn’t even a conscious decision; I just found myself craving healthier foods like fruits and veggies.” Listening to one’s body, she believes, is important.

In her 40s, Lucci embraced Pilates wholeheartedly, seeing it as a transformative experience. She practices regularly to maintain strength, toning, and vitality. “If only I had discovered it sooner,” she remarked. It has positively impacted both her physical and mental health, helping her manage stress better.

Lucci has faced health challenges too. Having undergone two heart surgeries due to a genetic condition inherited from her father, she prioritizes her well-being. “I asked my doctor about any changes I should make in my lifestyle,” she recalled. “He basically said my diet was good but emphasized the necessity of being aware of my family health history.”

She learned that her father had a calcium disorder, which she inherited. “Being open about your family’s medical history is crucial,” she stressed. “I had never thought it was necessary before because I didn’t have health issues.”

Her approach to aging is unique. “I don’t see wearing heels as an issue,” she laughed. She believes in taking good care of herself, underscoring the importance of annual check-ups and maintaining a robust skincare routine. “What goes into your body definitely reflects on your face,” she added.

“Aging is something we can’t escape, but how we handle it is entirely our choice,” Lucci said. She appreciates that everyone has different preferences regarding aging, which is ultimately a personal decision. “For me, I want to keep going and doing more for as long as I can,” she concluded.
