Man pushes 83-year-old from behind onto NYC subway tracks in what appears to be a random act of violence

Subway Attack in Manhattan

On Sunday morning, New York City police reported that an unidentified individual approached an 83-year-old man from behind and pushed him onto the subway tracks at a station in Manhattan. This unsettling incident was stated to be unprovoked.

Before attacking the elderly man, the same suspect had also pushed a 30-year-old man onto the tracks. Fortunately, the younger victim was rescued before anything worse happened; however, the elderly man remains in critical condition, while the younger man, John Rodriguez, is recovering from injuries sustained during the ordeal.

Rodriguez told WABC he was on his way to work when the attack happened. “I panicked and started calling for help—not just for myself, but for the other man who had been pushed,” he shared. He remembered how chaotic everything felt, especially when he started recording, capturing the moment a good Samaritan attempted to help him. It was during that precise moment that, tragically, the elderly man was shoved.

After the attack, the suspect fled the scene, leaving on foot. Police released a video report indicating that the incident appeared random in nature. On Tuesday morning, a person of interest was taken into custody in Brooklyn, though authorities have not yet confirmed his identity. Pending charges are expected.

Both victims were transported to the hospital, with police later reporting that the 30-year-old was in stable condition but that the situation for the elderly victim remained critical.

Rodriguez expressed his fear, saying, “Just the thought of riding the subway gives me a panic attack,” acknowledging that he wasn’t particularly eager to ride again anytime soon.

According to the NYPD, there have been nine subway assaults recorded so far this year—a stark contrast to just three at this time last year. The police encourage anyone with information about this incident to reach out to the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers hotline.
