FBI Raids Home of Suspect in Michigan Synagogue Attack
Federal agents conducted a raid at the residence of Ayman Mohammad Ghazali, the man behind the recent violent attacks on a synagogue and preschool in Michigan. This occurred on Thursday, as authorities rushed to piece together the motive behind the violence.
Agents from the FBI were observed entering Ghazali’s home in Dearborn Heights later that evening. This followed an alarming incident where the 41-year-old naturalized citizen from Lebanon drove a vehicle filled with explosives into Temple Israel in West Bloomfield Township and opened fire.
Photos show officials meticulously searching the mansion, moving from room to room in their efforts.
Images also reveal investigators examining the open garage, surrounding the property, and conducting a thorough sweep of the area.
While the search continued, some photos captured decorative features within the home, including sconces and fireplaces.
During the attack, Ghazali was shot and killed by armed security guards who thwarted his aggressive incursion into the synagogue, which also serves as a nursery school.
Reportedly, Ghazali drove into the building at around 12:20 p.m. and began firing a rifle before the security guards could react. His vehicle was believed to be carrying explosives, including mortar shells, which ignited during the incident, leaving his charred body at the scene.
In what could have been a tragic situation, fortunately, none of the approximately 140 children present at the temple’s kindergarten were harmed.
It has been reported that the security chief sustained injuries after being struck by a car but is on the mend.
Roughly 30 police officers and paramedics were hospitalized due to smoke inhalation as they entered the smoke-filled building in a search for victims.
Investigators speculate that Ghazali’s attack might have been motivated by the recent loss of family members during an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon.
Dearborn Heights Mayor Mo Baidun noted that Ghazali lost several family members, including a niece and nephew, in this incident, which he claims took place around 10 days prior to the synagogue attack. Supposedly, it may have also claimed the lives of his two brothers.
Furthermore, it is reported that he reached out to his ex-wife shortly before the attack, urging her to take care of their child.
Ghazali, born in Lebanon in January 1985, moved to the U.S. in May 2011 on an immigrant visa, later gaining citizenship on February 5, 2016, during the Obama administration.
His ex-wife filed for divorce in August 2024, finalizing it about seven months later. They had at least one child together.
Ghazali had a job at Hamid Restaurant, a local Middle Eastern dining establishment in Dearborn Heights.
Authorities are treating the incident as a targeted act of violence against the Jewish community. Oakland County, where Temple Israel is located, has one of the largest Jewish populations outside New York.
Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard indicated that law enforcement was already on high alert given the heightened tensions related to various international conflicts.
“Sadly, we’ve been discussing the potential for this kind of event for two weeks,” Bouchard stated.
In response to the incident, police have ramped up security around synagogues and places of worship throughout the region as the investigation unfolds.
