Criticism Among Hosts Over Anti-Semitism Accusations
Tucker Carlson, co-founder of the Daily Caller News Foundation, and Piers Morgan have recently voiced their criticism of Ben Shapiro, the former editor-in-chief of the Daily Wire. During an interview on Friday, they accused Shapiro of giving a platform to those they believe are anti-Semites.
In response, Shapiro claimed that both Carlson and Morgan have also hosted individuals like Nick Fuentes, who have anti-Israel views. Morgan, in a segment titled “Piers Morgan Uncensored,” suggested that Shapiro is attempting to suppress free speech, especially for Americans expressing their opinions on Israel. Carlson echoed this sentiment, stating that such restrictions would endanger the basic rights afforded by the Constitution.
“This is about free speech,” Carlson said. “We have the constitutional right to express what we believe to be true. That also includes the ability to critique foreign countries. I’ll always stand by my right to do that. It’s a right endowed by God, not the U.S. government.”
He further challenged Shapiro’s stance, questioning what it means to punish those labeled as anti-Semites under the law. “In this country, we can’t prosecute or persecute individuals for their beliefs. Rights of conscience are fundamental here,” he explained.
Morgan added that Shapiro’s accusations could inadvertently allow actual anti-Semites to escape scrutiny. He argued that Shapiro’s perception of dissenters as anti-Semitic dilutes the reality of true hate-driven sentiments. “It’s a dangerous line we’re walking,” Morgan remarked, noting how this could create space for real anti-Semites who aren’t easily identified.
Carlson noted that his priority lies with those wrongly accused rather than focusing solely on potential instances of genuine anti-Semitism. He asserted, “It’s critical that we don’t punish the innocent. That principle is fundamental to American justice.” He criticized Israel, pointing out that the country has a history of punishing innocent people, which is a concept, he suggests, that Shapiro disregards.
In defense of Shapiro’s statements regarding Israel’s actions in Gaza, Morgan called attention to the inconsistency of criticizing Shapiro for simply stating facts. Carlson described Shapiro as being influenced by emotion despite marketing himself as focused on objective facts.
“He built a brand on that premise,” Carlson said, referencing Shapiro’s phrase “facts don’t care about your feelings.” However, he implied that Shapiro’s loyalties have skewed his objectivity. Additionally, SiriusXM’s Megyn Kelly spoke out in defense of Morgan, emphasizing that Shapiro seems intent on excluding differing viewpoints from the conservative discourse regarding Israel.
