Obama Says Israel Attempted To Involve Him In Conflict With Iran As Well

Obama Discusses Netanyahu’s Influence on U.S.-Iran Relations

In a recent interview, former President Barack Obama alleged that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attempted to pull him into a conflict with Iran. Obama stated that throughout his presidency, Netanyahu pushed for arguments similar to those he made to President Donald Trump, advocating for a full-scale war against Iran’s government. Critics argue that Israel’s influence led Trump to consider military action against American interests, according to reports.

Obama reflected, “I think my prognosis was accurate.” He suggested that perhaps Netanyahu achieved his goals through these actions, but he expressed doubts about whether it truly benefited either the Israeli or American people. His disagreement with Netanyahu has been well noted over the years.

Earlier in April, Obama also responded to Trump’s aggressive stance towards Iran, emphasizing that any American leadership should uphold human dignity and decency, both domestically and abroad. He mentioned that failing to recognize the humanity of people in oppressive regimes could lead to dangerous global consequences, warning against arrogance and self-interest.

A report from early April highlighted a significant meeting in February involving Trump, Netanyahu, and key security officials. During this meeting, Israeli representatives proposed the idea of a regime-change war they believed would assure an easy victory, weakening Iran’s ability to control the Strait of Hormuz. Mossad’s intelligence suggested that heavy bombardment could create a favorable environment for Iranian rebels to overthrow the government, and they proposed that Kurdish fighters might also contribute to destabilization.

According to the report, Netanyahu confidently presented his case. Trump responded positively, indicating that this collaboration seemed beneficial, presumably greenlighting a joint operation between the U.S. and Israel.

The Trump administration has repeatedly denied that Israel played a pivotal role in the decision to initiate military actions, as has Netanyahu. Trump has emphasized that, in his view, Iran was poised to attack first, adding, “I felt that strongly.” He asserted, however, that he might have inadvertently pushed Israel’s decision-making without being overtly persuaded by them to engage in conflict.

On April 20, he bluntly stated via social media that “Israel never encouraged me to go to war with Iran.”
