Why Would You Want to Punish All These Workers? Sen Fetterman Criticizes Fellow Democrats for Impact of Government Shutdown

Fetterman Critiques Democratic Party on Government Shutdown

On Saturday, Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania expressed his dissatisfaction with his party regarding the ongoing partial government shutdown and its effects on federal employees and operations.

The shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has led to multiple agencies, such as the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), implementing “emergency measures.” Fetterman mentioned that he has had discussions with TSA officials about how the shutdown affects operations during his regular travels.

“I’m the only Democrat, literally the only member of Congress, who refused to vote to shut down DHS,” Fetterman noted during an appearance on “The Big Weekend Show.” He added that it’s clear this has little impact on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which is already funded and won’t likely pursue necessary reforms.

“Why would you want to punish all these workers under DHS? The only outcome is that it makes us less safe, as people are working without pay,” Fetterman argued. “I travel through airports almost weekly, and I’ve asked numerous TSA employees if they are okay with not being paid. Not a single one has said, ‘No, that’s fine.’

In light of recent events, including the fatal shootings of Alex Preti and Renee Nicole Goode during Operation Metro Surge, Democrats have been advocating for new restrictions on ICE. This comes amidst reports of federal agents heading to Minnesota to address welfare fraud involving Somali immigrants.

Fetterman also took aim at the Democratic strategy to block funding, stating, “It’s not a big deal. I really don’t see why this is happening, other than it’s seemingly harmful for Democrats to agree with something that Republicans might support. To me, it’s straightforward: country over party, or ‘I’ll prioritize those union workers,’ or focusing on American security over what the base wants.”
