Predictions for the NCAA tournament bracket featuring an unexpected team making it to the men's Final Four

The 2026 NCAA Basketball Tournament is shaping up to be quite predictable, with many top teams emerging as strong favorites and few significant surprises anticipated.

Last year, just seven lower-seeded teams managed to pull off first-round wins, and Arkansas, a No. 10 seed, was the only double-digit seed to make it to the Sweet 16. Beyond that, underdogs really struggled as the tournament progressed.

The 2025 Final Four featured all four No. 1 seeds, while most second-seeded teams reached the Elite Eight, with Texas Tech being the only third seed to make it that far.

Given the influx of talent through NIL deals and the transfer portal, something similar might happen in the 2026 tournament. I think many of the leading contenders will continue to dominate the landscape. It’s not exactly thrilling to predict chalky brackets, but this season’s elite players are definitely hard to overlook, indicating a strong run for championship hopefuls.

Top-seeded Duke seems well-prepared, particularly as they face No. 8 seed Ohio State in the second round—assuming they can contain senior guard Bruce Thornton. A potential matchup featuring Hall of Fame coaches Bill Self and Rick Pitino could take place between No. 4 Kansas and No. 5 St. John’s, where the Big East champions look more capable than last year.

Meanwhile, Michigan State enjoys a favorable matchup as the No. 3 seed against No. 11 South Florida, while the seventh-seed UCLA may make things interesting for second-seeded Connecticut, though UConn likely has the edge.

In the second weekend, Duke could face a strong test against St. John’s, but their defense should pull them through. UW and Michigan State might offer one of the more physical contests, with the Huskies edging ahead in a close game. A Duke and UConn match could serve as an exciting showcase in the East Region, featuring two storied programs vying for a Final Four berth—Duke may have the upper hand with their well-rounded squad.

Defending champions Florida are also facing challenges in their quest to repeat. The top-seeded Gators might have a smoother path against struggling teams, particularly in a likely second-round matchup against No. 8 Clemson, and No. 5 seed Vanderbilt recently knocked off No. 4 Nebraska.

Third-seeded Illinois got a boost after North Carolina’s star Caleb Wilson suffered an injury. They could ease past No. 11 VCU, while Houston faces No. 7 St. Mary’s for what could be a tricky second-round game.

The Sweet 16 presents Florida with a chance to seek revenge on Vanderbilt after their earlier tournament elimination. Their previous contest in Nashville was a high-scoring affair, and a similar outcome seems likely. Houston is expected to leverage its home advantage against Illinois, complicating the path for Florida State with a likely showdown against the Cougars.

Arizona is also vying for a return to glory after a long absence from the Final Four, but they’ll need to navigate a tough No. 9 Utah State first. The fourth-seeded University of Arkansas will face fifth-seeded Wisconsin, both teams eyeing a promising turnaround after recent successes.

In another anticipated second-round clash, No. 3 Gonzaga is set to take on No. 6 BYU. While Gonzaga boasts a top-notch defense, they might struggle offensively against the Cougars. Following their Big Ten Tournament success, Purdue ascended to the second seed and will compete against No. 10 St. Louis while aiming for another Sweet 16 appearance.

The matchups between Arizona and Wisconsin revive memories of past NCAA Tournament rivalry, particularly the Elite Eight contests in previous years. Arizona is expected to prove their strength over the Badgers, while Purdue effectively counters BYU’s aggressive style, advancing to the Elite 8.

Despite showing some vulnerabilities in the Big Ten Tournament, No. 1 Michigan remains a formidable force and should be able to manage No. 9 seed St. Louis effectively. Things may become complicated for No. 4 Alabama as they navigate their opposition without key player Aiden Holloway, who was dismissed from the team.

After a solid ACC season, the University of Virginia is again in the spotlight for the tournament. But No. 6 seed Tennessee may prove too tough, as they look to advance past Virginia. Iowa State’s performance against No. 7 Kentucky signals their potential to make a deeper run.

In the Sweet 16, Michigan is expected to eliminate Akron, while Iowa State should eclipse Tennessee amid a spirited crowd in Chicago. The regional finals will be lively, yet in the end, Michigan emerges victorious through their depth and size.

In a high-stakes Final Four, Duke seeks revenge against Houston in the first semifinal, while Michigan challenges Arizona in the other. The championship game will be a repeat of their earlier showdown, and this time, Duke hopes to secure victory against Michigan for the national title.
