Senate Debate on the SAVE America Act
The Senate discussion around the SAVE America Act kicked off on Tuesday, highlighting the divisions among various factions regarding the bill. It’s quite revealing to see who’s supporting and opposing it.
An article from E&E News offered insight into the turmoil among environmental groups and their Democratic allies in Congress. This legislation, introduced by Republican Sen. Mike Lee of Utah and Rep. Chip Roy of Texas, has stirred quite a reaction.
What seems to be causing panic among these supposed champions of the environment? Well, the American Voter Eligibility Protection Act, or SAVE Act, is straightforward. Its aim is to ensure that only U.S. citizens can participate in federal elections. There are no energy policy obligations tied to it, nor green subsidies or tax breaks involved. It’s really about maintaining election integrity.
The bill stipulates that proof of citizenship—like a passport, birth certificate, or a REAL ID—is required for voter registration. Additionally, it mandates photo ID at polling places, closes mail-in registration loopholes, and directs states to purge noncitizens from their voter rolls.
So, why all the distress from the climate change advocates? The reasoning appears clear: they likely understand that their extreme policies don’t resonate well with the American public.
Justin Kwasa, the Democracy Program Director at the League of Conservative Voters, shared his thoughts. He warned that this bill would heavily affect “low-income Americans, people of color, rural residents, LGBTQ+ individuals, and families displaced by natural disasters.” However, many of his assertions have been echoed by the political left. Such claims seem dismissive, suggesting that these traditional Democratic voters are somehow excluded from everyday life.
Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse from Rhode Island openly stated that the bill is “designed to suppress the Democratic vote.” Sen. Ed Markey from Massachusetts further claimed that Republicans aim to secure “regressive real policies” by incapacitating Democratic influence.
But really? Are we talking about needing a driver’s license, implying that Democratic voters don’t drive? Or needing a Social Security number as though they don’t have one? What about needing a birth certificate, suggesting that they haven’t been born?
Recent weeks have seen many Democratic politicians express confusion over how to locate their birth certificates or obtain copies. However, millions of average Americans, including a fair number of Democratic voters, have dealt with this and often found solutions with a quick online search. It’s not that difficult. I assure you. It’s just absurd.
Mr. Lee, met with enthusiastic applause, remarked, “The only way the SAVE America Act makes it less likely that Green New Scam candidates will win is if their victory relies on illegal non-referendum votes. If they’re worried about that, perhaps they should focus on appealing to American voters.”
This anxiety reveals some hidden truths within the climate lobby. For years, they’ve insisted on widespread public approval for their anti-energy initiatives. However, when the gimmicks are stripped away and real citizens are asked to vote on policies that could hike electricity costs, eliminate reliable coal and gas jobs, and impose unreliable renewables, support dwindles.
That’s why the League of Conservative Voters is already indicating they might score this bill negatively in their annual ratings. Their ambition of achieving their net-zero goals relies on maintaining political control, often at any cost. Citizenship verification and photo ID threaten that power. What more is there to say?
Polling consistently shows significant backing for basic voter protections, with around 83 percent of Americans—majorities including Democrats, Hispanics, and Black Americans—supporting photo ID requirements for voting.
The climate agenda clearly lacks popularity, and they’re aware of it. This is why they’re fighting fiercely against the notion that only citizens should determine America’s direction.
Americans should have the right to shape their energy future through secure and legal elections. It’s high time to pass the SAVE America Act, restore electoral integrity, and ensure that real Americans have a voice.
