Shapiro criticizes Hegseth for being 'extremely incompetent' regarding the Iran war

Shapiro Critiques Hegseth’s Leadership and Military Strategy

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro recently criticized Army Secretary Pete Hegseth’s approach to military operations in Iran, characterizing it as “playing with toy soldiers.” He expressed concern over how the Pentagon and White House communicate these operations to the public.

Shapiro, who is campaigning for re-election and may run for president in 2028, highlighted the implications of former Obama staffers discussing military actions. He also mentioned that China is watching what he described as the Trump administration’s “weakness” in handling Iranian issues alongside Israel.

Democrats have voiced apprehension regarding Hegseth’s leadership of the Army, particularly since Pennsylvania troops were part of the forces involved in strikes on Iran. “The fact that Pete Hegseth is in charge of this issue is a significant problem; he’s utterly incompetent,” Shapiro remarked.

He compared Hegseth to “an eight-year-old playing with toy soldiers” and criticized the aggressive language used by the administration. Shapiro emphasized that the framing of these military operations diminishes both the “humanity of the region” and the contributions of American soldiers, including those from his state.

According to Shapiro, Congress had a chance to rein in the decisions made by Trump and Hegseth but failed to do so, calling them “very weak, poor souls” who surrendered their authority. He expressed skepticism about Trump’s ability to effectively manage the conflict, arguing that the administration has not clearly defined its reasons for engaging with Iran.

“One moment we’re told the focus is on nuclear armament, then it shifts to concern over Israeli action. Ultimately, the situation has evolved, and we’re left to deal with Khamenei’s son, who could be even more dangerous,” Shapiro noted.

While acknowledging the Iranian regime’s notorious reputation, Shapiro mentioned that Trump has not effectively communicated the immediate threats to the American public. “He hasn’t faced the nation from the Oval Office to explain why we must act now when there is no real threat,” he stated.

Shapiro underscored that adversaries are noticing the perceived vulnerabilities in American action. “China’s leadership is likely calculating when to move against Taiwan, contrasting with the current U.S. president’s inability to build solidarity,” he added.

Although he has criticized former President George W. Bush’s strategies in the War on Terror, Shapiro acknowledged that Bush did manage to unify public support effectively.

Shapiro, who is Jewish, has previously diverged from his party on subjects such as anti-Semitism, notably regarding incidents affecting Jewish students at the University of Pennsylvania.

Responding to Shapiro’s comments, White House Press Secretary Olivia Wales asserted that for decades, both Republican and Democratic presidents have sought to eliminate the Iranian threat, claiming that Trump has shown unprecedented resolve. She reiterated the administration’s objectives: to dismantle Iran’s missile capabilities, reduce its naval power, and prevent the country from acquiring nuclear weapons.

Wales remarked, “Democrats will criticize anything to undermine President Trump, even as their actions contribute to our enemies. But Trump and his administration put America first.”
