Intense Developments in HBO Max’s the pit Season 2 Episode 11
Episode 11 of the HBO Max series the pit takes a harrowing turn, echoing the intensity of the first season’s finale. It culminates in a violent scene where beloved character Nurse Jesse Van Horn (Ned Brower) is arrested by masked ICE agents while trying to protect a patient.
**Spoiler Alert: Season 2 Episode 11 “5:00 PM” is now available on HBO Max**
In a troubling moment, Jesse is tackled and handcuffed as he intervenes for a detainee. Following his removal, his colleagues express concern about the long wait they might face without any knowledge of where he’s taken.
This isn’t the first mention of ICE in this season. A storyline revealed that a boy, injured by a firework, was sent back to Haiti after his family faced an immigration crisis. Social services are now involved due to the boy’s drinking, raising the possibility that his sister, although born in the U.S., might be separated from him.
In the same episode, ICE agents, played by JuJu Alexander and Josell Mariano, arrive to take another patient, Pranitha (Ramona Dubarry), to a detention center. Robbie (Noah Wyle), the attending physician, encourages the agents to remain professional, but their presence creates a palpable tension in the hospital. Amid growing frustration over the agents’ impact on patient care, Jesse courageously attempts to get involved.
I’m not entirely sure what Jesse’s chances are. Amid shouts from Robbie, who rushes to help, Jesse is found on the floor. McKay (Fiona Dourif) argues that the agents are overstepping their boundaries, witnessing masked individuals attacking a patient who is already in distress.
Last season’s measles plotline felt eerily timely, but this season’s scene with ICE feels even more so, particularly in light of real-life tragedies, including the recent murder of nurse Alex Preti in Minneapolis.
When DECIDER asked about the parallels between the show and reality, Supriya Ganesh noted, “I was struck by how close it mirrored real events.” She added, “What we hope to highlight are deeper issues that extend beyond what’s depicted in the show. I want to spark a discussion about the severity of the situation in our country.”
Meanwhile, as Robbie formulates a plan to support Jesse, another character, Javadi (Shabana Aziz), captures the incident on video. Ironically, with the hospital’s digital service down, it becomes the only way to connect online—perhaps implying that “Dr. J” has fresh content for his followers.
Jesse isn’t the only nurse in jeopardy. The episode closes with a dramatic moment where Emma (Letitia Hollard) is accosted by a patient.
Will Jesse make it out? What about Emma? Stay tuned for more episodes of the pit, airing Thursdays on HBO Max.
