Six Flags Introduces Age Restrictions to Tackle Harassment Issues
Six Flags is rolling out new age restrictions at several parks during the spring break season, aiming to address rising harassment incidents from younger visitors. This move has elicited mixed reactions among guests.
At Six Flags Over Texas, all guests aged 17 and under must be accompanied by an adult who is at least 21 years old. According to the park’s website, the policy emphasizes that “the safety of our guests and employees is always our top priority.”
In light of increased disruptive behavior within the park and the entertainment industry at large, management believes these changes are necessary to foster a safe, family-friendly environment.
Chaperones will need to show a government-issued photo ID with their date of birth upon entry, and the park is limiting the number of minors to five per adult. Additionally, guests aged 17 and older may be asked to verify their age, or possibly be denied entry altogether.
Management expressed confidence that these updates will help preserve the welcoming atmosphere that so many guests value, creating a place where families and friends can enjoy their time together.
Other parks in the Six Flags network have implemented similar policies, mandating that guests under the age of 15 must also be accompanied by an adult.
In Jackson Township, New Jersey, Six Flags Great Adventure has declared its own chaperone policy starting September 2024, currently requiring guests under 17 to be with an adult for visits after 4 PM.
Social media reactions have varied. Some users expressed frustration, feeling that the parks are limiting the fun for teenagers. One commenter noted, “I’m 15 years old and working here; I can’t even enjoy the park.” Others echoed sentiments about the restrictions being overly strict, with comments about the parks turning into a “glorified nursery for teenagers.” Some even expressed exasperation with the term “takeovers,” while others just hope for a more lenient approach, particularly in thrill rides.
Over recent years, several incidents at Six Flags parks involving young crowds have raised concerns. For example, on March 2, 2024, a confrontation between police and youths at Six Flags Over Georgia led to a large evacuation after gunfire erupted during an unruly gathering on opening day. The situation escalated when officers pursued one of the alleged shooters, 15-year-old Sheere Littlefield, who was later shot and killed during the encounter. Although Littlefield faced multiple charges, he did not sustain serious injuries.
Local residents indicated they were aware of social media chatter that suggested potential trouble at the park that night, prompting further scrutiny of safety measures. Consequently, the Atlanta-area park has also adopted a chaperone requirement for visitors under 17.
