Albanese Heckled at Sydney Mosque During Eid Visit

On Friday, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese faced significant backlash during a visit to the largest mosque in Australia, as attendees expressed their frustration over his views regarding Israel’s ongoing conflict with Hamas.

People in the crowd hurled insults, calling him “rotten dogs” and “genocide supporters” in response to the casualties endured by Palestinians in Gaza following the Hamas attack on Israel earlier this month. Video clips captured Albanese alongside Home Secretary Tony Burke at Lakemba Mosque, where locals were celebrating Eid, marking the conclusion of Ramadan.

“Why is he here? Get him out of here!” someone shouted amid the tension. The Albanese administration has been criticized for advocating for a ceasefire in Gaza while also asserting Israel’s right to self-defense.

As chaos unfolded, the mosque’s secretary, Gamel Khair, urged attendees to remain composed, emphasizing the need for an open dialogue with political leaders without hostility. Yet, voices called out accusations against the Prime Minister, insisting he was accountable for the deaths of many innocents.

Eventually, security personnel took Albanese to an office within the mosque, later escorting him out into a motorcade. As he exited, shouts of “shame” and a derogatory term referencing his last name circulated in the air. One individual who confronted him remarked, “It’s shameful to come here and act like nothing happened.”

Despite the negative reception, Albanese shared a cheerful photo of himself with mosque attendees on social media. In a post-visit conversation with reporters, he described the overall reception as largely positive, stating that they navigated through the crowd without major incidents. “There were a few hecklers, but they were dealt with,” he mentioned, downplaying the commotion. He added that the community didn’t support the heckling and handled the situation themselves.
