Iran Fires Ballistic Missiles at Key UK-U.S. Military Base

Iran’s Missile Attempt at Diego Garcia

Iran seems to have launched intermediate-range ballistic missiles (IRBMs) for the first time, targeting Diego Garcia, a crucial military base in the Indian Ocean. This base, shared by the U.S. and the UK, plays a vital role in projecting Western military strength across the Middle East and Asia-Pacific, supporting everything from naval vessels to heavy bombers.

According to U.S. defense sources reported by CNN, the attempted missile strike occurred on a Friday, but neither missile hit its target, resulting in no damage or injuries. The Daily Telegraph added that one missile malfunctioned mid-flight, while an interceptor missile shot down the other launched from a warship.

Ballistic missiles differ from cruise missiles in that they ascend into the atmosphere or near space before descending toward their targets. This trajectory makes them harder to intercept. If one were to be destroyed during its descent, it could scatter debris at high speeds around the target area.

IRBMs are categorized by their range, which places them just behind intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). Prior to this incident, Iran hadn’t been known to possess such missile capabilities, raising questions about whether the country’s space program was concealing other weapons systems or if previous assessments of its missile technology had been incorrect.

While Iranian state media chose not to acknowledge the failed attack, they emphasized their possession of long-range weapons capable of threatening U.S. interests beyond the region.

This missile attempt coincided with Iran’s warnings to the UK to cease its involvement in U.S. “aggressions” and to stop backing “Zionist…terrorist networks.”

The Diego Garcia base has been in the spotlight recently due to the UK government’s discussions about transferring the land to Mauritius, an African nation perceived to be aligning more closely with China, which has raised concerns among critics.

Despite British diplomats’ determined efforts to convince the U.S. that relinquishing control of such a strategic air base was necessary for international law compliance and a geopolitical win, the implications of the arrangement raised eyebrows. Former U.S. President Trump has notably criticized the plan, labeling it a “disaster” for the UK.
