King Charles Engages with His Chickens Amidst Royal Duties

King Charles III has recently been seen tending to his chickens at Crackingham Palace, a humorous nod to Buckingham Palace, located at his Highgrove estate. Long-time royal photographer Chris Jackson, who has captured the king over two decades, shared insights during a tour he received at the estate. Jackson’s experiences are detailed in his new photo book titled “Modern Majesty.”

Crackingham Palace was humorously highlighted in a documentary titled “Finding Harmony: A King’s Vision,” available on Amazon Prime Video. Jackson noted that many are unaware of the king’s chicken-keeping but mentioned that these moments provide a refreshing escape from his royal obligations.

“One of my favorite photos is Charles feeding the chickens, including Burford Brown and Mullan’s,” Jackson remarked. He also reflected on how the king’s environmental passions manifest during these quiet moments at home.

In the documentary, the king is seen in rain boots, carrying chicken feed and departing with a basket of fresh eggs—it’s a stark contrast to his often formal schedule. This routine, Jackson emphasizes, seems to bring the king a sense of peace amid his royal responsibilities.

Interestingly, Jackson highlighted how many folks were oblivious to this side of the king’s life until the recent documentary. “Feeding the chickens isn’t something you typically associate with royalty,” he added with a chuckle.

Royal experts echo this sentiment. Ian Pelham Turner noted that Charles has a long-standing affection for farming, having acquired Highgrove in 1980 to create a sustainable environment. The once extensive search for the perfect breakfast egg, Turner recalled, involved boiling seven eggs daily. Charles’s affinity for the countryside likely stems from his upbringing, particularly from his grandmother, Queen Mother, who instilled the values of caring for animals.

Photographer Jackson also shared that despite health challenges, Charles continues to embrace this hobby, showing resilience. In December, he mentioned reducing his cancer treatment, which many considered a positive step forward.

Further reflecting on Charles’s lifestyle, it was noted how he has implemented eco-friendly practices at Highgrove, including a flourishing wildflower meadow home to dozens of species. “His gardens reflect a real commitment to sustainability,” one expert elaborated.

His love for chickens is more than just practical; they symbolize a connection to his heritage and love for the land. Charles reportedly enjoys sharing fresh, organic eggs and even has crafted ways to help local wildlife access water features in his garden.

With such diverse interests, King Charles balances his responsibilities with pursuits that keep him grounded. His passion for the environment, along with lighthearted traditions like naming the chicken coop, showcase a more personable side of a monarch often viewed through a formal lens.

As he navigates his challenges, it’s clear that moments spent nurturing his chickens help keep the weight of royal duties at bay, marking a unique intersection of tradition and sustainability in the modern royal family.
