Tragic Shooting of College Student in Chicago
An undocumented immigrant is facing charges in connection with the fatal shooting of a college student in Chicago, authorities report. This individual, identified as Jose Medina, a 25-year-old from Venezuela, had a prior criminal record and reportedly entered the U.S. during the current administration.
Medina was arrested on Friday following the death of 18-year-old Sheridan Gorman, a freshman at Loyola University Chicago. The incident occurred Thursday and was described as a possible ambush, with reports indicating that the suspect was disguised in some way. He was taken into custody in the Rogers Park area, close to where the shooting took place.
Medina is set to appear in court on Monday afternoon.
Authorities stated that Gorman was shot as she attempted to escape with friends. Tragically, she was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving her family devastated.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, Medina, who arrived in the U.S. back in May 2023, had previously been apprehended for shoplifting and released shortly thereafter. The details surrounding his migration have stirred controversy, especially after he was charged with serious offenses including first-degree murder and attempted murder.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has since taken action to detain Medina after these latest charges.
In the wake of this tragedy, concerns have arisen about the immigration system. Gorman’s family expressed their anguish in a statement, attributing their daughter’s death to systemic flaws that allowed such criminal individuals to be present in communities.
“We are profoundly disappointed in the failures that led to this crime,” they said. “This case must be thoroughly prosecuted, and we cannot afford any lapses in accountability.”
Local officials, including Councilwoman Maria Hadden, noted that Gorman’s death seems to reflect unfortunate circumstances, implying that she and her friends were simply caught in the wrong place at an unfortunate time.
The ongoing discussion about safety in Chicago is further intensified by prior remarks made by officials, including Governor JB Pritzker, who has faced backlash over his perceived focus on city safety in light of ongoing crime concerns.
