Israel carries out attacks on Iran as Trump urges for calm

High-Stakes Negotiations Amid Rising Tensions

As President Trump attempts to manage complicated peace talks with Iran, Israel seems to be acting independently. On Monday morning, Trump announced a temporary halt on attacks against Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure to allow the peace discussions to continue. He characterized the negotiations as positive, even suggesting they might help Iran regain some strength.

This isn’t the first instance where Israel has launched attacks while the United States is involved in peace negotiations. Trump noted that “we’ve had very strong discussions,” emphasizing the importance of seeing how things progress.

He also expressed optimism that the ongoing negotiations could benefit regional nations, including Israel. However, despite Trump’s diplomatic efforts, Israel appears to be pursuing its military goals in the area.

Shortly after Trump ordered the postponement of attacks, Israel executed military operations aimed at Iranian infrastructure. The Israeli Defense Forces confirmed assaults on what they described as “Iranian terrorist regime headquarters” and significant military production sites in Tehran.

An Israeli official remarked that while mediation efforts from various nations were understood, Trump’s comments took them by surprise, saying, “I had no idea things were moving so quickly.” When asked if Trump was aware of the planned airstrikes, the White House referred inquiries to Trump’s earlier remarks, and the Department of the Army declined to comment.

Israel’s timing raises questions, especially after their recent attack on an Iranian power plant, which led to a retaliatory response, including strikes on Qatar’s LNG facilities last week. Trump stated on social media that the U.S. had no prior knowledge of the Israeli actions that could impact another ally.

Additionally, there’s the backdrop of President Trump once compelling Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu to apologize to Qatar’s leader after previous military actions threatened peace negotiations. Trump has previously criticized Israel for these unilateral military decisions, emphasizing the risks they pose to peace efforts in the region.
