House Republicans Target 2026 Midterm Elections Amid DHS Shutdown
House Republicans are focusing on potentially vulnerable areas in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections, all stemming from the shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and ongoing issues at the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
“While House Democrats are shutting down DHS, TSA agents are working without pay, and Americans are stuck in long security lines,” stated Mike Marinella, spokesperson for the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), in a release on Monday. He highlighted that the agency would concentrate on Democratic lawmakers in 28 districts particularly impacted by TSA delays.
The NRCC has initiated a paid advertising initiative accusing Democrats of forcing TSA agents to work unpaid while travelers deal with excessive wait times at security checkpoints.
“Democrats are being held responsible by the American people for the chaos in our airports and transportation systems,” former President Trump remarked during an anti-crime rally in Memphis, Tennessee, on Monday.

He further suggested, “We want the public to realize that we won’t free them from the trap they’ve created.”
The NRCC’s campaign ads will be directed toward battleground areas in states like California, Florida, Indiana, Maine, Michigan, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Texas, Virginia, and Washington.
This strategy follows President Trump’s decision to send Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to airports grappling with long TSA lines, which required passengers to check in as much as five hours in advance, risking missed flights during a peak travel weekend.
TSA Officials Warn of Potential Airport Closures
“We’re not letting the Democrats ruin our nation,” Trump told reporters before boarding Air Force One in West Palm Beach, Florida. He described Democrats as “the most destructive and sick people.”
In addition, groundings at New York City’s LaGuardia Airport followed an accident involving an Air Canada plane attempting to avoid a Port Authority vehicle on the runway during landing, causing cancellations and delays across the country.
Senate Majority Leader Schumer: Concerns Over Iran
“In light of the chaotic situations and lengthy wait times at airports this past weekend, I urge Congressional Democrats to end the disgraceful shutdown of DHS and restore funding for TSA and airport security,” Trump reiterated at the Memphis event.
He emphasized that the legislative standoff appears to stem from a desire to prioritize illegal immigrants over Americans’ safety. “They want to assist criminals in sanctuary cities,” he alleged.
Currently, House Republicans are navigating a slim majority, standing at 217 to 214. This count includes newly appointed independent Rep. Kevin Kiley from California, who remains aligned with the Republicans.
Three vacancies linger unfilled due to the resignations of former Representatives Mikie Sherrill (D-N.J.), Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), and the passing of former Representative Doug LaMalfa (R-Calif.).
