Famous donkey attraction in Los Angeles at risk

The beloved donkey stand might soon be closing its doors. A recent state court decision ruled that the owner must vacate the premises.

For over six decades, visitors have flocked to Olvera Street to snap photos with Jorge, the stuffed burro dressed in a colorful sarape. This traditional Mexican cart, known as “La Carretta,” has become a staple in Los Angeles culture.

However, the family that has operated the stand lost their legal contest against the city, which had issued an eviction notice to Richard Hernandez.

After Hernandez’s mother passed away, he learned that her request to have his name included on the vendor’s lease was not fulfilled, though the reasons were unclear.

The eviction notice was quick to follow, as the mayor’s office announced that with the lease set to expire, the area would be opened up for public bidding.

“Mr. Hernandez has been informed that the bidding process is open to the public,” the city stated.

This potential loss weighs heavily on Hernandez, who has been involved with the stand since he was just 13 years old. He hopes to secure the bid for the stand through a GoFundMe campaign.

“I’m not seeking handouts. I’m reaching out for support to bid on our family’s spot and keep this small business alive, preserving our legacy and this cherished Los Angeles landmark,” he explained on the fundraising page.

Hernandez mentioned his attempts to negotiate with the city concerning rent payments had been fruitless.

Many Angelenos have expressed their dismay at the thought of losing Jorge. A nearby vendor lamented, “Keep him here. He’s part of Olvera Street. You’re taking away from our whole community.”
